Newark, NJ has been held up as a real world example of what defunding the police could actually look like. The Newark Community Street Team, which we featured on this week’s episode of The Laura Flanders Show, has been instrumental in giving the public more control over public safety, but according to journalist Dax-Devlon Ross, much more needs to be done. In this interview, Ross tells Laura that police violence and brutality is just one symptom of larger, systemic issues. Defunding the police needs to be paired with new investments in communities, especially in the wake of Covid-19, which is disproportionately affecting communities of color. Racial justice and economic justice are part of the same struggle.
