Yoruba Richen & Aishah Rahman on MLK Day 2009 “Dancing on the Cusp of Hope”

In January 2009, documentary filmmaker Yoruba Richen traveled to Washington with her mother Aishah Rahman, to mark the MLK Day holiday and witness the Inauguration of Barack Obama. Playwright, author and professor, the granddaughter of a slave, Aisha’s life and work followed the arc of American history. “I feel like I’m dancing on a cusp…. in a time of possibility,” she says in this interview, which was filmed for GRITtv by Elizabeth Press. Aishah Rahman was born in Harlem on November 4, 1936 and died on December 29th, 2014, at her home in San Miguel de Allende.
