Social Justice Reporting Fellowships Available 2024

A limited number of three-month reporting fellowships are available at a nationally syndicated, independent TV and radio program called Laura Flanders & Friends, currently airing on close to 300 PBS stations as well as online.

These fellowships are intended for aspiring and early-career journalists and digital media professionals with an interest in social justice journalism. Fellows will develop skills and gain experience producing short videos and in-studio discussions for a weekly public affairs program, and have the opportunity to bring their unique voices, perspectives and experiences into the newsroom.

While fellows may participate in studio shoots and meet in person with mentors, the work is primarily remote, with an opportunity to consult with staff in every area of production. Flanders and her staff will provide one-on-one mentorship and supervision to help fellows maximize their involvement in production and promotion practices.

Available May - July and Sept - December, fellows will be expected to work roughly 20 hours a week and participate in the production of 2 - 3 half-hour episodes. They will also be given an opportunity to produce short video or audio content in collaboration with LF Show staff.

Fellows will be paid $15/hour and credited on screen


Responsibilities:
- Research and fact-checking.
- Organizing prep docs and logging guest information, release forms, transcripts, etc.
- Assisting with TV/radio/podcast promotion, selecting audio/video excerpts for distribution on social media platforms, gathering relevant articles and materials for weekly Show Notes.
-Work closely with the Audio Director.
- Assisting the Supervising Producer with research, booking, episode development, and production.

Qualifications:
- Can follow written and verbal instructions.
- Comfortable working independently.
- Be able to function well on a fast-paced production schedule.
- Experience with Adobe Premiere Pro, Audition (or another comparable DAW) a plus, and Photoshop and/or Canva preferred.
- Demonstrable commitment to journalism, or independent media, and social justice issues required.
